In July 2009 the APPG arranged a high profile meeting to discuss UK government policy on children affected by armed conflict in the Great Lakes region. The discussion focused on the prevention of 'lost generations' of children and the intergenerational transfer of poverty that neglecting children - in Great Lakes countries and elsewhere - can lead to. In too many instances, such neglect threatens the achievement of the MDGs and has long term and far-reaching consequences that will have a negative impact on the lives of children for generations to come. Parliamentarians present at the meeting heard from senior members of Warchild, Save the Children UK, Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers, UNICEF and Invisible Children. Representatives from FCO, DFID and MoD were also present. The meeting was public and minutes of the discussion held can be viewed here.
