On 28 April, APPG member Lord McConnell of Glenscorrodale tabled a debate on people living in extreme poverty in the developing world. In opening the debate, Lord McConnell mentioned his concern over the case of Burundi, which will cease to receive bilateral aid from the UK in 2012. Calling for the government to ensure and monitor support from the European Union, he highlighted the need to actively promote peace-building in conflict-affected countries, failing which no development strategy could be effective. Similarly, APPG Vice-Chair Lord David Chidgey brought up the case of DRC, stressing that reducing the country’s exceedingly high level of poverty will depend on progress achieved on peace stabilisation, and adding that this would require a significant uplift to UK’s bilateral aid. A full transcript of the debate can be found here.
