The APPG generally recruits 2-6 interns a year. Some places are advertised, but speculative applications (a brief covering letter and CV) are welcome at any time. Competition tends to be strong for the limited positions available, but we have taken people from a variety of backgrounds and at different stages in their careers. Some key points to keep in mind if you want to apply:
• An undergraduate degree is generally the minimum requirement - usually we ask for postgraduate degree or undergraduate degree plus significant relevant experience.
• Relevant work experience counts for a lot - even if not in a Great Lakes context, then experience with advocacy, drafting, and politics.
• Evidence of interest in the Great Lakes region and relevant policy issues does matter however - if you've worked there that's a particular bonus. However, we are politically neutral, so strong party political identification on the issues we work with, or anything which might lead people to question our position, will be a major drawback.
• Practical ability to draft a good report or official letter is a rare and valued commodity.
• Fluency in French will make you stand out - knowledge of Swahili is also an advantage.
• Specialised experience of one or more of the APPG's core policy areas is useful - we often give people specific projects to lead on.
Interns are with us generally for 1-6 months, 1-3 days a week, but again it varies. We pay lunch but not travel expenses. For more information, or to send in an application, contact the coordinator. |
