GW: Review of Mining Contracts in the Democratic Republic of Congo

A coalition of non-governmental organisations from Europe, North America, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) launched an international appeal today demanding the publication of the final report of the ministerial commission on the review of mining contracts without delay. Amnesty: Rwanda- Fair trial conditions must be met for Genocide suspects

Amnesty International today urged governments worldwide not to transfer people suspected of crimes during the 1994 genocide to Rwanda for trial. The organization released a memorandum outlining the criteria national governments and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) should apply when considering transferring people to Rwanda for trial. Amnesty: DRC- Health concern/ Detention without trial/ Torture

Two high-ranking members of the national Congolese army are in need of urgent medical treatment for injuries they received when they were tortured by the "Special Services" police. They are being detained without trial at the Kinshasa Penitentiary and Re-education Centre, the main prison in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Amnesty: Uganda- Torture

Police arrested about 30 people on 29 October and tortured at least 22 of them in Apac District in the north-east of the country, reports Amnesty International. They are now in danger of further torture. They have no legal counsel, and have not received adequate medical care, though at least four of them have serious injuries. ICG: DRC- Bringing Peace to North Kivu

North Kivu is again a crucible of conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since fighting resumed between the insurgents of Laurent Nkunda and the national army in December 2006, over 370,000 civilians have been displaced in the province. Due to the failure of the latest attempt to integrate Nkunda’s troops into the army, the crisis has become much worse since May 2007, reports International Crisis Group. As Congolese politicians and diplomats scramble to avoid full-scale war in the eastern province of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Human Rights Watch today issued a report documenting horrific murders, rape, and pillage by all parties to the conflict.
