HRW: Burundi- Violations of the Rights of Children in Detention

Human Rights Watch published a report today on the widespread detention of children in Burundi. At the end of 2006, just over 400 children between the ages of 13 and 18 were incarcerated in Burundian prisons. Countless more children were held in communal holding cells and police lock-ups. Serious deficiencies in the judicial system affect all detainees in Burundi but fall particularly heavily on children. To read the full report, click here.

UN: DRC- Illegal exploitation of natural resources

The UN Secretary- General published a report today on measures to prevent the illegal exploitation of natural resources financing armed groups and militias in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, including through a certificate-of-origin regime. ICG: Burundi- Democracy and Peace at Risk

International Crisis Group reports on the marked deterioration in Burundi’s political climate since September 2006. Led by the National Council for the Defense of Democracy-Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD), the government has arrested critics, moved to muzzle the press, committed human rights abuses and tightened its control over the economy.
