Amnesty International today issued a report on widespread sexual violence, most commonly rape, in Burundi. These assaults are committed by both state and non-state actors, including law enforcement officials and military officers. Amnesty: Uganda: Further information on incommunicado detention PDF Print E-mail
The 41 people who were detained incommunicado from 13 to 17 August have been released on bail, after appearing before the Magistrates' Court in the capital, Kampala, on 23 August, Amnesty International reported today. All the detainees have been charged with "conspiracy to commit a felony" and are scheduled to appear before court on 11 September. To read the full article, click here.

Burundi has made relatively rapid, substantial progress in democracy and easing of inter-ethnic tensions, due to its citizens desire to embrace national unity and compromise, as well as the international community’s heavy involvement in the Arusha peace process. HRW: Uganda- June 29 Agreement on Accountability and Reconciliation PDF Print E-mail

On June 29 the government of Uganda and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) signed an agreement on accountability and reconciliation as part of the peace talks that have been taking place in Juba, southern Sudan, since July 2006.
