Amnesty- Rwanda: Abolition of the Death Penalty PDF Print E-mail
Amnesty International today issued a statement welcoming the promulgation of legislation by Rwanda to abolish the death penalty. Rwanda is the first country in the Great Lakes region to abolish the death penalty and strongly confirmed the worldwide trend to end capital punishment by becoming the 100th country to abolish the death penalty in law. HRW: Rwanda- No Trial- Police Killings and Collective Punishment PDF Print E-mail

Human Rights Watch reported today that Officers of the Rwanda National Police (RNP) shot and killed at least 20 detainees in 10 separate incidents in the six months from November 2006 to May 2007. Many of these killings appear to have been extrajudicial executions, crimes that violate both international human rights law and Rwandan law. To read the full report, click here.

 
GW: DRC- Kilwa Trial- A Denial of Justice PDF Print E-mail

Nine members of the Congolese army and three expatriate employees of Anvil Mining were eventually charged in relation to the Kilwa massacre which took place in the DRC in October 2004. The trial concluded in June 2007 with the acquittal of all defendants. The report "Kilwa Trial: A Denial of Justice", available on Global Witness, documents the irregularities that plagued the investigation and trial in Lubumbashi. International Crisis Group's latest report on the Democratic Republic of Congo states elections were a milestone in the peace process but much remains to be done to consolidate the gains. A return to full-scale war is unlikely but violence in Bas-Congo and Kinshasa in early 2007 with over 400 people killed and renewed threats of war in the Kivus show the country's fragility. International Crisis Group reports on peace negotiations between the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and the Ugandan government which still have a chance of ending one of Africa’s longest, most brutal conflicts. The present process benefits from greater - if still inadequate - external involvement, and has made some significant gains, notably removing most LRA fighters from Northern Uganda. UN: DRC- Report on the United Nations Organization Mission PDF Print E-mail

The United Nations published a report today, submitted pursuant to Security Council resolution 1711 (2006) of 29 September 2006, by which the Council extended the mandate of the United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) until 15 February 2007.
