In April, Mark Pallis attended the commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda.

Trip facilitated by Rwanda and by the Aegis Trust.  3/4/04 • Depart London 4/4/04 • Arrive Kigali • Visit Kigali Memorial Centre, built by the Aegis Trust • Meeting with Stephen and James Smith to discuss centre • Visit to Rwanda 10 press centre to be briefed on events for the commemoration • Attend opening of International Conference on Preventing Genocide • Short informal meeting with Charles Murigande – Foreign Minister, Government of Rwanda • Meeting with Journalists covering commemoration • Meeting with Ardin Halter, Artist who designed stained glass windows in Kigali Memorial Centre 5/4/04 • Meeting with Sue Hogwood, UK Ambassador to Rwanda and Burundi • Greeting Caroline Vaudrey, Political Officer, UK mission to Rwanda and Burundi • Meeting with Colin Kirk, Head of DfID, Rwanda • Informal meeting with Managing Director of Fed Ex, Rwanda, Bill Kayonga, to gain perspective from business community • Meeting with Theonest Musondeshika, Mayor of Kigali 6/4/04 • Meeting with Desire Mugwiza, First Secretary, Rwandan Mission to Kenya • Formal meeting with Dr Biruta Vincent, President of the Senate of Rwanda • Meeting with J Appolon Kabahizi, Proect Coordinator, Aegis Trust, Rwanda 7/4/04 • Rwanda 10 Commemoration events all day – Burial at memorial centre, Events in National Stadium • Discussion with Fergal Keane • Informally met Romeo Dallaire • Short meeting with Amb. Francis K Mathaura, Secretary to the Cabinet, and Head of the Publuic Service, Office of the President of Kenya • Meeting with Ken Kato, Former Investigator for International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, presently Deputy Head of Security for the ICTR in Rwanda 8/4/04 • Meeting with Georgina Yates, DfID representative in Burundi • Return to UK 9/4/04 • Arrive in UK |
